And become the proud owner of a piece of desert!

I know this doesnt really fit in the Home Improvement category...but I cant find any other fitting category.

About a month or so ago...I overheard one of my colleagues talking about how she and her husband just bought a piece of land outside of Las Vegas for 400 grand. This apartment complex, a condo...not a house. This isnt a area that is going to be a development...and the land hasnt even been developed. All they bought is a piece of land for Four-Hundred thousand dollars.

Now I dont know about you...but I think this is a total waste of money, by people who have obviously not been anywhere else in America. I am from beautiful Northern Minnesota. I personally believe that it can be one of the most wonderful places to live and I have always wanted to go back and live up there. Why in the world would anyone spend so much money on a piece of flat, hot desert? I have no idea. For half of that amount, you can own a house as large as a mansion in Northern Minnesota. Look outside your windows and see natural trees. You have seasons...Spring, Summer, Fall and yes...even Winter.

I know people move down here because of the weather...as it is generally nice all year round. Hot in the summer and mild in the winter. Not much rain and not much snow. But there is something to be said about having the same weather every day. I know that when I go outside...its going to be clear, or partly cloudy...sunny...and warm. I dont need to know the forecast, because the clouds hardly get over the mountains and bring any inclement weather. I need variety. It drives me nuts when we dont get any rain...although it is entertaining when it does rain because the oil soaked ground gets all slippery and people have accidents left and right.

I know the cost of living has gone up in this area...and that the property values are through the roof. But I can't personally see myself spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a piece of land made up primarily of rocks and weeds. I prefer trees, lakes...animals....etc.

The more I am down here, the more i am getting used to the area...but nothing could make me want to spend the rest of my life down here. Why would i want to...when I could possibly own a home on a lake with no neighbors nearby?

I mean...in the end...if you buy a piece of land down here...you simply put, are buying a piece of barren desert land.

I so know what you're talking about.  I spent the last 9 years in South dakota, where spring and fall happen but if you blink you'll miss them.  It snows and is wintry from October throught April and sometimes may.  I grew to detest that..I wanted, needed some seasonal variety.

Now that I'm living in Illinois I have the opportunity to experience a fall that lasts for longer than 2 days, and I adore it!

I don't blame you at all for not wanting to buy property in Nevada.  The money that your colleague and her husband paid for a piece of undeveloped land would get you a vertiable mansion in my area!

I've lived in Las Vegas off & on over the last 15 years.

It sounds like they are land "speculating." And it sounds like they don't live here.
And, as with any speculation, there are risks vs rewards.
Land speculation is best left to people who know/specialize in it, from what I read.
I hope they know what they are doing. If they live in Minn, they may or may not know LV.

There are still more people moving into LV, than are moving out, which means growth.
We are currently going through a water crisis, which could dampen future growth.
The RE housing market "peaked" about 6 months ago, and has gone down 5-10% [my estimate].

Peter,
These people are coworkers...so they live down here in LV. I think growth is a great thing. Unfortunately...Las Vegas is growing, to me, much faster than it can handle.
