not bad on the turnaround either

Well since we moved out here to western WY, I've looked and applied for teaching jobs. There are very (next to none) few school districts in the area so my teaching opportunities are very limited. I had an interview, but didn't get the job in one district. Thats OK though. I could sub but the pay is less than I need or want (more need), and it would only last until June and who knows if I would be called daily.

Anywho...I applied to two national trucking companies this weekend. One got back saying I was out of their hiring radius, and the other called me on Monday and we discussed things, and this morning they gave me a job offer.

Basically, I will be working local jobs for this national fleet, driving their truck on a dedicated route. I will be delivering parts to various stores and other places around the state of WY and be home daily. The pay is salaried, which for me is ok becuse if I ran for cents per mile...Id have to run about 2k miles in five days...which is easily possible...but it depends on the route...so the salary is more dependable as the route can change daily etc. Still trying to figure the math as per month I will make less than i did as a teacher, but per year I will make more...thats because I get paid weekly. Plus I get a raise after six months and then a year

The job offer is conditional based on my drug test, physical and training. They will put me on a bus and take me to their training center for a few weeks...then I will zip back here and run the routes with another local guy.

While I will be primarily local, I will occasionally do some overnight stuff too, filling in for others. Also might make an overnight trip or something when the truck needs to be brought in for maintenance (Unless it gets serviced here in the area, they wernet sure of that).

Now I just need to study up for my permit and get that squared away. The only downside is that I don't start training for a few weeks so money is going to be tight. Bu tthats OK...Im just happy to be out working again.

LW beat me to it.  The first thing I thought of when I read about your job offer was your ability (or INability) to pass the physical.

Don't pack your bags for training just yet.

My Uncle (by marriage) has a CDL, but still gets turned down for trucking jobs due to his weight.  If you aren't physically able to climb all over the place and move quickly, then they won't hire you.  He ended up driving a school bus because they had a lot more lenient physical requirements.

The driver was 5 foot 7 inches and weighed 345 pounds when she applied for employment. She had passed the company's road test and was offered the job contingent on passing the DOT physical examination.

And now for the rest of the story:
"However, mobility or agility testing documentation was not done to support this decision. The courts determined that the company perceived the applicant as having a disability because of her obesity and that the company's refusal to hire was a violation of the ADA. Careful documentation of objective findings in support of the decisions regarding driver qualification would help to avoid similar litigation. "

I don't know where you got your other sources, but this particular one was a 1999 article about a 1994 lawsuit. Airport bus driver. Lol if she needed a CDL-A to drive that, I would be impressed. Most bus driving positions require only a slightly higher class. Depending on the bus she could have driven, it would be a C or B depending on the size and weight of the thing.

Also...a quick walk around a truck stop will show how a good chunk of drivers are overweight...grossly (in more ways than one) overweight. DOT physicals I believe are good for two years, but many drivers are on one year passes, and some on 3-6 month passes. Just depends on how well they did.

BP is ok as long as you are under meds for it and it is under their required levels.

Each company has a different physical. Watkins Shepherd for example has a rigorous one where you have to step onto a platform at about 2.5 feet high (here, thats the height of our dinner table), without help or assitance from anyone / anything. They do lots more stuff than that, that particular part of the physical just stuck out to me.

Most of them are based on agility, flexibility, coordination...etc.

My main concern is my BP / pulse as I havent taken the meds all summer. Teaching is not the most stress-free job in the world and that is when my BP would go up. I just need to go in, get my meds transferred here and get back on track and I should be OK. That and I need to drink water....never drink enough and that keeps my pulse up.

Yeah, but they've already GOT a license and a job.

You don't have either.

Right, Ziggy.

As always we're all a bunch of idiots who must acknowledge the superiority of the master.

So how's that trailer house selling?

Have you SOLD it?

Did you break even, as you SAID you would?

Or are you still paying mortgage payments on a house you don't even live in?

No we haven't sold the house, we haven't listed it yet. The manager at the park is trying to sell the place as they get people in all the time looking for homes. And yes, people have stopped and applied for financing for the house in attempts to buy it at the price we want, but they haven't qualified.

That does happen, making mortgage payments on a home if you move somewhere and still own your previous home. So far, one payment.

And many of 'em are owner operators, too. Not that this makes any difference as far as the DOT is concerned, but many companies have stricter requirements.Whatever, Zig. If you think you can get it, there's no harm in trying. I just wanted to give you a heads up, it's not as easy as you think, the work is extremely physical (regardless of the promises most companies make ya) and someone of your girth is going to have a difficult time of it.

True, many companies have the same, many companies have stricter requirements. I appreciate all concerns and suggestions here. I AM a big dude, like I have said before. However, I know what I am physically capable of too. Just because Im tired or sweating or whatever, doesn't give me a reason to stop or slow down. I have surprised / pissed off a few people because of my work ethic. I have a job to do and I do it. LIke I have said before, my dad told me when I worked for his store that he didn't pay me to sit on my ass. Well...technically I do get paid to sit on my ass here, but that is only part of the job.

True while many companies offer drop and hook jobs, this particular one is not and involves using a pallet jack and possibly a lift-gate type of system. I've used pallet jacks before and know how to manuever around inside a trailer (previous grocery store along with WM experience). Plus Im used to hauling quite a few rather heavy and loaded pallets from the dock to the freezers located in the front of the store. I might occasionally have to unload a pallet by hand or something, but that is ok with me. I asked alot of questions and got the best information I could from her...and Im trying to come up with a new list (any suggestions? lol) of what else to ask.

We shall see. I need to call back tomorrow and get a location of a clinic that can do the testing.
