Well today we had a rummage sale. Can't really call it a garage sale (thats what I call it back home anyways)...no garage. We tried to get some tables from the school we worked at but they had just waxed the floors and can't get into the gym where they are stored for three days; so we ended up using our own tables.
We weren't scheduled to be 'open' until 8 as we were still setting up stuff and everything. Well jeesh, around 7am, people started coming and we kept saying we were not ready yet. Well finally, at around 7:30, we still werent ready but had three cars at our cul-de-sac so I waved em in anyways. One guy was, seriously, hiding out in the next cul-de-sac and when he saw us wave people over, he came zipping in across other peoples yards (dirt). Within five minutes we had already sold our couch for 30 bucks, later on getting an offer for 50, but I refused it since I already sold it.
We didn't really have much to sell...just some old clothes of mine and books of Marcies and a few things we just didn't want or need anymore. Ended up making about 100 bucks, not bad for about 4 hours. Its about 12:15 now and we stopped a while ago, people are still coming over...I should put up a closed sign or something. Tons of people, and many were asking about furniture and even the tables we were using to put stuff on.
One thing I didn't think of when we started was the house. I told a few people about it and then had the idea of making a sign as well so people would know we were selling the house. I think I showed it to 3 families, each one really liked it, one of which might come back later today. If those fall through, I think I'll come back later this week and clean the carpets (will do that anyways) and have an open house next weekend. Too bad we didn't think to put it in the paper for today as an open house. Oh well.
It was interesting though. Marcie and I went to various garage sales in her hometown area when we were dating and that was fun, just zipping around on a saturday morning (what else are ya going to do?). She even went a few times this summer with her aunt Grace. I guess I never thought how seriously (if thats the right word) some people take it. Lots of people were trying to get here rather early, including one who thought about stopping by yesterday for the furniture. From some conversations I heard, it sounded like some people were seeing each other for the second time this morning as well, not too sure how many other sales there were going on today.
One of my students from this last school year even came to see me. I should have hired him on to help me move, I mentioned it before to him and he said he would....if only we had everything packed.
So I think the packing is going good, a tad slower than Id like but there is a lot of stuff to go in boxes still and I don't think we have that many boxes left. Plus...after getting rid of some of the furniture, Im thinking the truck is a scoch too big. We got the Penske truck on Thursday and its due back on Monday so we are taking our time. We hope to be moved out of here completley tomorrow.
.....scratch that...make that 4 families asking about the house.
